# Italy invades Ethiopia on 3 October 1935 in a war of colonial conquest

Date: 1935

## The fact

On 3 October 1935 Italian forces invaded the Ethiopian Empire from Eritrea and Somalia without a declaration that met League standards. [Mussolini](/people/benito-mussolini) ordered the war to build an empire and to revenge 1896. Addis Ababa fell in May 1936; he proclaimed an empire from a Palazzo Venezia balcony.

It is one event.

## Context

This is a war of conquest against a League member. League records are the international file. Haile Selassie’s later Geneva speech is independent testimony, not Italian minutes.

Benito Mussolini’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers date the row.

## Evidence and sources

League of Nations fonds at UN Geneva and Britannica’s Italo-Ethiopian War independently date 3 October 1935 and the 1936 annexation claim.

Official or archival record: United Nations Geneva Archives — League of Nations fonds (https://archives.ungeneva.org/; United Nations Office at Geneva).

## Significance

Invading a recognized state for empire is a humanitarian-harm path of high confidence.

The invasion is not yet the chemical-weapons row. Split gas.

Invading a recognized state for empire is a humanitarian-harm path of high confidence.

## What is established and what is not

Established: invasion 3 October 1935 and 1936 annexation claim. Not established: that sanctions uniquely caused later Axis alignment as a necessity.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Benito Mussolini.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date, signatory, or non-occurrence; a demonstrated forgery; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of other causes.

Contribution type is direct. They are not a public rating.
