# Mussolini founds the Fasci di Combattimento; squadrist arson and beatings become the method

## The fact

On 23 March 1919 in Milan Mussolini founded the Fasci Italiani di Combattimento. Through 1920–22 fascist squads burned union halls and cooperative offices, beat socialists, and killed with the protection of large parts of the police and army. He is the named founder and public legitimizer of that violence, not a bystander to ‘excesses’.

It is one event.

Local ras (Grand, Farinacci, Balbo) ran many raids. Sharing is not a reason to drop his newspaper applause, funding, and later amnesty politics. Squadrismo is extra-judicial political violence.
