# Graziani’s Cyrenaica campaign, under Mussolini’s government, herds civilians into concentration camps

In 1930–33, during the reconquest of Cyrenaica against [Omar](/people/ilhan-omar) al-Mukhtar, Italian authorities deported tens of thousands of civilians into desert concentration camps with mass death from hunger and disease. [Mussolini](/people/benito-mussolini)’s government appointed the commanders and claimed the colony.
