After 25 July 1943 dismissal and 12 September German rescue, [Mussolini](/people/benito-mussolini) proclaimed the Italian Social Republic (Salò) on 23 September 1943, a rump that fought Italian partisans with German backing, executed rivals, and kept racial persecution.
