# Italy sends aircraft, troops, and bombs to Franco’s war against the Spanish Republic

Date: 1936

## The fact

From July 1936 [Mussolini](/people/benito-mussolini)’s government sent aircraft, the Corpo Truppe Volontarie, and naval support to Franco, including the 1937 bombing of civilian towns in a war that killed civilians as method.

It is one event.

## Context

Hitler’s Germany shared the war. Italian submarines sank shipping. Guernica is primarily German; Italian bombs elsewhere still count.

Benito Mussolini’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers date the row.

## Evidence and sources

Cambridge WWII history and Britannica independently record Italian intervention in Spain from 1936.

Official or archival record: Cambridge History of the Second World War (https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/cambridge-history-of-the-second-world-war/; Cambridge University Press).

## Significance

Exporting troops and bombs into a foreign civil war is a humanitarian-harm path.

Spain is not Ethiopia. Keep the theatres.

Exporting troops and bombs into a foreign civil war is a humanitarian-harm path.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Italian forces fought for Franco from 1936. Not established: that Mussolini uniquely designed every Spanish atrocity.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Benito Mussolini.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date, signatory, or non-occurrence; a demonstrated forgery; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of other causes.

Contribution type is direct. They are not a public rating.
