# Mueller says report does not exonerate the president

On 29 May 2019 [Robert Mueller](/people/robert-mueller) made his only public statement as special counsel, saying that if his office had had confidence the president clearly did not commit a crime it would have said so, and that charging a sitting president was not an option under Justice Department policy.
