On 26 July 2023 Niger’s presidential guard, commanded by General [Abdourahamane Tiani](/people/abdourahamane-tiani), detained elected president Mohamed Bazoum in the presidential palace. That night officers announced on television that the government was ended, institutions suspended, borders closed, and a curfew imposed. On 28 July Tiani appeared as president of the CNSP and head of state; the constitution was suspended.
