# Wilders demands an asylum stop and threatens to leave the governing coalition

Date: 2025

On 26 May 2025, [Geert Wilders](/people/geert-wilders) presented additional asylum and migration demands and said the PVV would leave the governing coalition if the cabinet did not move within weeks. NOS reported that the package called for closing the borders to asylum seekers, returning Syrians, closing reception centres and seeking to set aside European rules in order to implement an asylum stop. A separate NOS report previewed the press conference and the internal coalition pressure surrounding the proposal. The fact is limited to Wilders’ party demand and ultimatum on that date; it is not described as an enacted government policy. A proposal from the leader of a governing-coalition party can shape policy and public treatment of asylum seekers, but it has less direct institutional force than a statute, detention order or implemented border measure. The later collapse of the governing coalition is treated as a political consequence rather than an additional harmful act attributable through this fact.
