# A court finds Wilders guilty of group insult over the 2014 chant

Date: 2016

On 9 December 2016 a Dutch court found [Wilders](/people/geert-wilders) guilty of group insult; later instances altered the penalty path. The finding is an oversight/judicial record of the 2014 speech, not a ban from parliament.

The trial opened on 31 October 2016, and the Hague District Court convicted Wilders on 9 December 2016. On 4 September 2020 the Hague Court of Appeal upheld the conviction for group insult over the 2014 statement, acquitted him of incitement to discrimination and imposed no punishment; it also rejected his claim that ministerial interference invalidated the prosecution. On 6 July 2021 the Supreme Court left the group-insult conviction in place.
