# Bishops Ban measures in 1599 target Marlowe’s English Ovid elegies among other books

## The fact

In June 1599 the Bishops’ Ban, a Stationers’ and episcopal control measure, included among targeted satires and elegies the English Ovid that readers associate with Marlowe’s All Ovids Elegies.

## Context

Elizabethan erotic translation is how many English readers met Amores. Calling it in is a speech-and-school harm. Folger and BL independently frame the ban’s book-trade machinery.

[Ovid](/people/ovid) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
