# Port-Royal publicises the Holy Thorn cure of Marguerite Périer

## The fact

In March 1656 Port-Royal announced that [Pascal](/people/blaise-pascal)’s niece Marguerite Périer was cured of a fistula after contact with a relic of the Holy Thorn. Pascal treated the event as a sign in the Jansenist struggle. It is not a controlled trial.

## Context

Miracle publicity can divert care from replicable medicine and polarise a medical-religious public. Later clinical reading is independent of 1656 claims.

Blaise Pascal is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name.
