On 1 July 2024 [José Raúl Mulino](/people/jose-raul-mulino) took the presidential oath in Panama City, succeeding Laurentino Cortizo after the 5 May 2024 contest. The same day Panama and the United States signed a memorandum under which Washington would fund repatriations of people who entered through the Darién.
