# Papandreou requests EU-IMF bailout for Greece

Date: 2010

On 23 April 2010 Greek Prime Minister [George Papandreou](/people/george-papandreou) formally requested activation of the EU-IMF rescue mechanism to pull Greece out of its debt crisis. The plan offered loans from eurozone partners at about five percent interest plus a smaller IMF share, and led to the first Greek bailout in May 2010.
