# Pasteur reports hundreds of rabies treatments and the Académie launches a vaccine-centre plan

Date: 1886

## The fact

On 1 March 1886 [Louis Pasteur](/people/louis-pasteur) presented results of his rabies method, used on hundreds of bitten patients, to the Académie des sciences, which appointed a committee to plan a vaccine establishment. On 8 March the committee adopted a public-subscription plan. It is a [humanitarian-access](/drivers/humanitarian-access) opening: strangers could come for post-exposure treatment instead of relying on a private favour.

## Context

After Meister and Jupille, bite victims arrived from France and abroad at the École normale attic, which was not a hospital. The Academy’s committee and subscription are how a private laboratory became a public charitable project. Tsarist, Ottoman, and Brazilian gifts later appear on the subscription list; those gifts do not make Pasteur a minister. Do not treat every later colonial Pasteur Institute as this March 1886 vote.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

Institut Pasteur’s construction chronology at https://www.pasteur.fr/en/whats-new/latest-news/news/130-years-ago-institut-pasteur-was-under-construction dates the 1 March 1886 Academy presentation and the 8 March committee vote. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Louis-Pasteur independently treats the post-Meister influx and the Institute project as a public consequence, not as a secret.

Official or archival record: Institut Pasteur — 130 years ago the Institute was under construction (https://www.pasteur.fr/en/whats-new/latest-news/news/130-years-ago-institut-pasteur-was-under-construction; Institut Pasteur).

## Significance

Humanitarian-access path: a named place to bring the bitten. Mid weight in Paris, modest globally in 1886. High confidence on the Academy dates.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Pasteur reported the 1886 series and the Academy launched a centre plan in March 1886. Contribution is recorded as He reported the case series. The Academy appointed a committee and opened a public subscription. Complex shared institutional act. The impact note is A public treatment series plus a funded centre plan widened post-bite access beyond a single attic, a humanitarian-access path. The dated heading stays Pasteur reports hundreds of rabies treatments and the Académie launches a vaccine-centre plan on 1886-03-01, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument.

The attached driver is humanitarian-access. The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. The 1888 inauguration is a later organisation Fact, not this committee vote. Mixed effects of Pasteur reports hundreds of rabies treatments and the Académie launches a vaccine-centre plan are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Pasteur reports hundreds of rabies treatments and the Académie launches a vaccine-centre plan. Naming Louis Pasteur does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1886-03-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
