# Pasteur and Koch clash at the Geneva international congress of hygiene

Date: 1882

## The fact

In September 1882 at the International Congress of Hygiene in Geneva, [Louis Pasteur](/people/louis-pasteur)’s demonstration style and claims about anthrax vaccination met Robert Koch’s demand for stricter bacteriological proof, in a session already charged by the 1870 war. Pasteur spoke French science as a civilising mission; Koch answered with plate culture and a cooler laboratory ethic.

## Context

After Sedan, French and German laboratories were read as proxies for armies. Koch had published the tuberculosis bacillus in 1882; Pasteur’s group still leaned on attenuation shows. Neither man was a cabinet minister. Newspapers and students made the national reading. Lister’s antiseptic surgery is a neighbouring British path, not this Geneva room.

## Evidence and sources

The Académie des sciences at https://www.academie-sciences.fr/ is the official French learned home of Pasteur’s published replies in this decade. Science History Institute at https://www.sciencehistory.org/education/scientific-biographies/louis-pasteur/ independently places the Koch rivalry inside Pasteur’s later career, not as a children’s cartoon.

## Significance

Political-polarisation path inside science. Modest-to-mid weight: a congress is not a war. High confidence that the rivalry was public; the exact seating plan is not invented here.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Pasteur and Koch publicly conflicted in the early 1880s international congress circuit, including Geneva 1882. Not established: that either man ordered a diplomatic break, or that anthrax ceased to kill because of the quarrel. Contribution is recorded as He performed and spoke as the French pole. Koch and the German laboratory answered. Journalists nationalised the disagreement. Complex. The impact note is A public Franco-German laboratory quarrel taught audiences to hear germ theory as national honour, a polarisation path. The dated heading stays Pasteur and Koch clash at the Geneva international congress of hygiene on 1882-09-04, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. National laboratory honour is not the Pouilly-le-Fort survival table. Mixed effects of Pasteur and Koch clash at the Geneva international congress of hygiene are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

The attached driver is [political-polarization](/drivers/political-polarization). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Shared responsibility is part of Pasteur and Koch clash at the Geneva international congress of hygiene. Naming Louis Pasteur does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1882-09-04 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
