# Pasteur is appointed professor of chemistry and dean of the new Lille faculty of sciences

Date: 1854

## The fact

On 2 December 1854 [Louis Pasteur](/people/louis-pasteur) was named professor of chemistry and dean of the newly created Faculty of Sciences at Lille. It is not yet the 1857 lactic-fermentation memoir and not a Paris institute. Lille’s beet-sugar and alcohol trades sat next to the lecture hall. Pasteur’s later fermentation papers grew from those industrial questions, but those papers are separate Facts. A dean’s signature on a faculty is an administrative and teaching act, not a vaccine.

## Context

The Second Empire expanded provincial faculties partly to serve industry. Lille was a beet and textile city, not a medical capital. Pasteur’s famous remark that chance favours the prepared mind is later colour; the 1854 instrument is the appointment decree and the teaching post. Assistants and local manufacturers shared the applied questions. Sharing does not erase the named dean. Do not collapse Lille, the swan-neck flasks, and Pouilly-le-Fort into one wizard year.

Shared responsibility is part of Pasteur is appointed professor of chemistry and dean of the new Lille faculty of sciences. Naming Louis Pasteur does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1854-12-02 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## Evidence and sources

Institut Pasteur history at https://www.pasteur.fr/en/institut-pasteur/history locates the Lille years in the career sequence before the Paris attic and the later Institute. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Louis-Pasteur independently dates the 1854 Lille chair and deanship and the turn toward fermentation. Neither page is a complete payroll.

Official or archival record: Institut Pasteur — History (https://www.pasteur.fr/en/institut-pasteur/history; Institut Pasteur).

## Significance

Improving education path with a light industrial coupling. Weight stays modest: a faculty is not a mortality series. High confidence on the appointment year and office.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Pasteur became chemistry professor and dean at Lille in December 1854. Not established: that beet alcohol yields in the Nord changed by a measured series in that winter. Contribution is recorded as He held the dean’s office and the chemistry chair. The ministry created the faculty; local industrialists asked questions about beet alcohol. The impact note is A new provincial science faculty tied chemistry teaching to distillery problems, a modest education-and-industry path. The dated heading stays Pasteur is appointed professor of chemistry and dean of the new Lille faculty of sciences on 1854-12-02, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Do not treat later Pasteur Institutes in other cities as this Lille deanship. Mixed effects of Pasteur is appointed professor of chemistry and dean of the new Lille faculty of sciences are separate paths.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
