# The Academy committee opens a public subscription for a rabies institute

Date: 1886

## The fact

On 8 March 1886 the committee named by the Académie des sciences adopted a public subscription to fund an establishment for post-exposure rabies treatment. By November 1886 the total passed 1.7 million gold francs; construction land in Vaugirard was bought in 1887. The 1888 inauguration is a later organisation Fact. Foreign sovereigns and ordinary donors appear on the list. [Pasteur](/people/louis-pasteur) did not privately endow the whole house.

## Context

French research had been a ministry-and-faculty affair. A charitable public appeal for a laboratory was unusual. The fiscal path is the dedicated money, not a claim that the French budget became sustainable. Committee members, bankers, and journalists shared the raising of funds. Sharing does not erase Pasteur as the named cause. Do not treat later state research budgets as this 1886 subscription.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

Institut Pasteur’s 130-year construction note at https://www.pasteur.fr/en/whats-new/latest-news/news/130-years-ago-institut-pasteur-was-under-construction gives the 8 March 1886 vote and later franc totals. FEMS at https://academic.oup.com/femsre/article/48/3/fuae010/7659358 independently describes a combined public-private fundraise for the 1888 house.

Official or archival record: Institut Pasteur — 130 years ago the Institute was under construction (https://www.pasteur.fr/en/whats-new/latest-news/news/130-years-ago-institut-pasteur-was-under-construction; Institut Pasteur).

## Significance

Fiscal-sustainability path of modest weight: earmarked charitable capital for a health laboratory. High confidence on the committee date; franc totals follow the Institute’s own chronology.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Subscription money is not the 14 November 1888 ceremony. Mixed effects of The Academy committee opens a public subscription for a rabies institute are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: a public subscription for a rabies institute was opened in March 1886. Not established: that Pasteur personally accounted every franc, or that colonial institutes were funded by this same list. Contribution is recorded as He was the scientific cause of the appeal. The Academy committee, the state decree later, and named donors supplied money. Complex. The impact note is A public subscription that raised more than two million gold francs is a fiscal instrument for a research-treatment house, not a tax statute. The dated heading stays The Academy committee opens a public subscription for a rabies institute on 1886-03-08, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument.

Shared responsibility is part of The Academy committee opens a public subscription for a rabies institute. Naming Louis Pasteur does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1886-03-08 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
