# Louis Thuillier dies of cholera on the Pasteur mission sent to Alexandria

Date: 1883

## The fact

On 19 September 1883 Louis Thuillier, a young member of the mission [Pasteur](/people/louis-pasteur) had sent to study cholera in Alexandria, died of the disease. Roux, Isidore Straus, and Edmond Nocard were on the same Egyptian assignment. Koch’s German team was in Egypt too. The mission did not deliver a working cholera vaccine. It did cost a life the laboratory then commemorated.

## Context

Cholera in Egypt in 1883 was an international scientific race as well as a humanitarian disaster. Pasteur himself did not travel. Sending juniors into an epidemic without a specific protection is the welfare issue stored here. Koch’s group left with a bacillus claim; Pasteur’s group left with a funeral. That contrast is historical, not a cartoon of German virtue. Do not treat later oral cholera vaccines as this 1883 mission.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

Institut Pasteur history at https://www.pasteur.fr/en/institut-pasteur/history records the laboratory’s overseas missions and the human cost inside the founder’s lifetime. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Louis-Pasteur independently places assistants, including those who died in the field, in the Pasteur circle.

## Significance

Humanitarian-harm path: research tourism into an epidemic. Mid weight for the named dead, modest for Egyptian mortality Pasteur did not command. High confidence on Thuillier’s death in Alexandria in September 1883.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Thuillier died of cholera on the 1883 Pasteur mission to Egypt. Not established: that Pasteur intended the death, or that the mission uniquely worsened Alexandria’s epidemic curve. Contribution is recorded as He dispatched the team. Thuillier died; Roux, Straus, and Nocard shared the mission; Egyptian patients were already dying. Complex. The impact note is A poorly protected research mission into an epidemic that killed a named assistant is a [humanitarian-access](/drivers/humanitarian-access) failure path, not a successful vaccine. The dated heading stays Louis Thuillier dies of cholera on the Pasteur mission sent to Alexandria on 1883-09-19, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument.

The attached driver is humanitarian-access. The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Thuillier’s death is not Koch’s comma bacillus paper. Mixed effects of Louis Thuillier dies of cholera on the Pasteur mission sent to Alexandria are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Louis Thuillier dies of cholera on the Pasteur mission sent to Alexandria. Naming Louis Pasteur does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1883-09-19 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
