## The fact

In 1335 [Petrarch](/people/petrarch) obtained the canonry of Lombez in the diocese of the Colonna world, a papal-court living that paid him from ecclesiastical revenues while he lived as a man of letters. Further benefices followed. He took minor orders, not a cure of souls as a resident pastor.

## Context

Avignon’s fiscal church funded humanists. Shared with Cardinal Giovanni Colonna. Corruption here is the fusion of spiritual revenues with a courtier’s purse, plus the later gap between invective and receipt. It is not a modern criminal judgment.
