# At Liège in 1333 Petrarch copies Cicero’s Pro Archia as received in his letter-file

Date: 1333

## The fact

In 1333, on a journey through the Low Countries, Petrarch reports finding and copying [Cicero](/people/cicero)’s speech for the poet Archias in Liège. It is not a later critical edition’s colophon and not a Vatican exhibition. Pro Archia’s argument that letters belong in civic honour is why the find is not a random souvenir.

## Context

Northern churches still held Latin that Italian readers wanted. Shared with unnamed Liège keepers. Year-level because the day is not a civil register here. The 1345 Verona find of the letters to Atticus is a different instrument in a different city.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

Biblioteca Apostolica at https://www.vaticanlibrary.va/ is the principal later public keeper of Petrarchan and Ciceronian manuscript neighbourhoods. Treccani at https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/francesco-petrarca/ independently narrates the northern [hunt](/people/jeremy-hunt) for Cicero. Britannica confirms the manuscript journeys.

## Significance

Recovering a speech that defends a poet’s civic standing is a data-and-education path of high confidence on the report and modest weight on any later literacy series. It is not a copyright statute.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Liège 1333 is not Verona 1345. Keep the two Cicero finds apart. Mixed effects of At Liège in 1333 Petrarch copies Cicero’s Pro Archia as received in his letter-file are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established as received: a 1333 Liège copy of Pro Archia. Not established: a unique shelf-mark of the Liège exemplar in this date field, or that this is the Verona letters. Year-level. Pro Archia at Liège, year-level 1333, a poet-citizenship oration copied from a northern church book, not the Ad Atticum letters. Official locator https://www.vaticanlibrary.va/ is not independent locator https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/francesco-petrarca/. Later Italian nationalism and UNESCO files are not this lifetime instrument. Shared responsibility is part of At Liège in 1333 Petrarch copies Cicero’s Pro Archia as received in his letter-file. Naming Petrarch does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1333-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
