# Petrarch and Boccaccio sponsor Leontius Pilatus’s Latin Homer

Date: 1360

## The fact

In the years around 1360, through Boccaccio’s household at Florence and the Calabrian Leontius Pilatus, a Latin Iliad (and related Homer) reached [Petrarch](/people/petrarch), who had long wanted Greek epic he could not read unaided. It is not a later Aldine Homer and not Petrarch’s own Greek fluency, which remained limited.

## Context

Humanist Greek in this generation is collaborative and clumsy. Shared with Boccaccio and Pilatus. Education path is access to Homer in Latin dress. Mixed: Pilatus was a difficult employee in the sources. Later professorial Greek is another century.

## Evidence and sources

Treccani at https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/francesco-petrarca/ and Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Petrarch independently treat the [hunt](/people/jeremy-hunt) for Greek and the Boccaccio connection. Accademia Petrarca at https://accademiapetrarca.it/ is civic memory of the humanist.

Official or archival record: Treccani — Francesco Petrarca (https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/francesco-petrarca/; Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana).

## Significance

A Latin Homer in a Tuscan-Paduan network is an education path of high confidence on the episode and modest weight. It is not a unique Greek-enrolment series.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## What is established and what is not

Established as received: a 1360-neighbourhood Homer via Pilatus and Boccaccio. Not established: that Petrarch became a Hellenist. Complex shared work. Leontius Pilatus, Boccaccio’s house, Latin Iliad into Petrarch’s library around 1360, limited Greek of his own. Official locator https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/francesco-petrarca/ is not independent locator https://www.britannica.com/biography/Petrarch. Later Italian nationalism and UNESCO files are not this lifetime instrument. Leontius Pilatus, Boccaccio’s house, Latin Iliad into Petrarch’s library around 1360, limited Greek of his own. Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Homer-via-Pilatus is not the Canzoniere and not UNESCO. Mixed effects of Petrarch and Boccaccio sponsor Leontius Pilatus’s Latin Homer are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Shared responsibility is part of Petrarch and Boccaccio sponsor Leontius Pilatus’s Latin Homer. Naming Petrarch does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1360-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
