# Petrarch is crowned poet laureate on the Roman Capitol, 8 April 1341

Date: 1341

## The fact

On 8 April 1341 Francesco Petrarca received a poetic crown on the Capitoline, after an examination associated with King Robert of Naples and a Latin oration on the poet’s office. It is one public honour. Day precision is used because the oration and later copies of the privilegium carry 8 April 1341.

## Context

Avignon’s papal court and Angevin Naples both sat behind a ‘Roman’ laurel. Shared work with Robert, with Roman senators, and with Cardinal Giovanni Colonna’s patronage is required. Dante had not been so crowned in Rome; Petrarch’s ritual was a self-conscious revival of an ancient honour as he understood it. Later Risorgimento uses of the laurel are other people’s instruments.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Petrarch independently dates the 1341 coronation. ## Significance

A public crown for poetry is an education-and-culture path of high confidence on the date and of modest weight: it did not found a university. It advertised Latin letters as honourable beside law and theology. Mixed Angevin politics belong on a patronage row if stored separately.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Laureation is not the Canzoniere. Keep Robert’s exam distinct from Laura lyrics. Mixed effects of Petrarch is crowned poet laureate on the Roman Capitol, 8 April 1341 are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: a Capitoline laureation on 8 April 1341. Not established: a unique modern literacy coefficient, or that the ceremony equalled ancient Republican practice. He did not file a later UNESCO form. The portrait tradition is later painting, not a 1341 likeness guaranteed from life. Oration plus privilegium, not a nineteenth-century national feast. Naples examined; Rome staged; Avignon still paid benefices. Official locator https://accademiapetrarca.it/ is not independent locator https://www.britannica.com/biography/Petrarch. Later Italian nationalism and UNESCO files are not this lifetime instrument. Oration plus privilegium, not a nineteenth-century national feast. Shared responsibility is part of Petrarch is crowned poet laureate on the Roman Capitol, 8 April 1341. Naming Petrarch does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1341-04-08 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
