# Letter on the ascent of Mont Ventoux, dated 26 April 1336, to Dionigi da Borgo San Sepolcro

Date: 1336

## The fact

Familiares 4.1, addressed to the Augustinian Dionigi, narrates an ascent of Mont Ventoux with [Petrarch](/people/petrarch)’s brother Gherardo, a random opening of Augustine’s Confessions, and a turn from landscape to interior.

## Context

The climb may be partly literary. That possibility is why confidence is medium on the hike and high on the existence of the letter as a humanist set-piece. Shared with Gherardo and with Augustine as quoted book. It is not a welfare fact about Laura. Later Romantic alpinism is reception.

## Evidence and sources

The Latin Library’s Petrarch page at https://www.thelatinlibrary.com/petrarch.html locates public Latin letters. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Petrarch independently treats the Ventoux letter as a famous self-accounting. Different URLs.

## Significance

Teaching a reader to turn from view to book is an education path of modest weight. It does not measure mountain tourism. Mixed: if the letter is back-dated, the day is a literary date, already flagged.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## What is established and what is not

Established: a letter dated 26 April 1336 on Ventoux and Augustine. Not established: a unique path up the mountain or that every detail is reportage. Later printings are carriers. Familiares 4.1 to Dionigi; brother Gherardo; Confessions opened at random. Literary date possible; the letter still exists as a public instrument. Official locator https://www.thelatinlibrary.com/petrarch.html is not independent locator https://www.britannica.com/biography/Petrarch. Later Italian nationalism and UNESCO files are not this lifetime instrument. Familiares 4.1 to Dionigi; brother Gherardo; Confessions opened at random. Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Ventoux is not the 1341 crown. Do not treat a letter as a surveyor’s file. Mixed effects of Letter on the ascent of Mont Ventoux, dated 26 April 1336, to Dionigi da Borgo San Sepolcro are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Shared responsibility is part of Letter on the ascent of Mont Ventoux, dated 26 April 1336, to Dionigi da Borgo San Sepolcro. Naming Petrarch does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1336-04-26 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
