# Petrarch enters Visconti patronage at Milan, 1353–1361

Date: 1353

## The fact

In 1353 [Petrarch](/people/petrarch) accepted the hospitality and service of the Visconti at Milan, remaining until 1361, writing, diplomatically useful, and housed by a regime Boccaccio and others thought tyrannical. De vita solitaria’s praise of withdrawal does not cancel the payroll. Diplomatic missions for the Visconti are a neighbouring demo-harm row.

## Context

Friends saw a contradiction. Shared with Giovanni Visconti. Corruption here is dependence of letters on a despotic purse, not a unique bribe trial. Arquà later repeats a softer Carrara version of the same structure.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Petrarch independently dates the Milan Visconti years. Treccani at https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/francesco-petrarca/ restates the 1353–61 block. Accademia Petrarca is civic memory, another URL.

Official or archival record: Britannica — Petrarch (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Petrarch; Encyclopaedia Britannica).

## Significance

Signorial patronage is a corruption-and-dependence path of high confidence and moderate weight. Mixed: the years were productive of Latin work. Production does not erase the purse.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

The attached driver is [institutional-corruption](/drivers/institutional-corruption). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Visconti Milan is not Arquà and not Lombez. Mixed effects of Petrarch enters Visconti patronage at Milan, 1353–1361 are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Petrarch enters Visconti patronage at Milan, 1353–1361. Naming Petrarch does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1353-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
