# European Commission launches EU Vaccines Strategy and joint COVID-19 vaccine procurement

On 17 June 2020 the European Commission presented the EU Vaccines Strategy to accelerate vaccine development, manufacturing and deployment. It negotiated Advance Purchase Agreements on behalf of Member States and used the EUR 2.7 billion Emergency Support Instrument to finance part of manufacturers' upfront costs, pooling purchasing power to secure timely and equitable access.
