# Picasso’s public work after Gernika is anti-Franco and does not return to Franco’s Spain

## The fact

[Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso)’s Guernica was commissioned by the Spanish Republic after the 26 April 1937 bombing and was kept out of Franco’s Spain for the rest of his life.

## Context

Occupied Paris 1940–44 is a separate ambiguity row. Anti-Franco and staying in Paris can both be true. Split them.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Republic commission and refusal of Franco-era return. Not established: that Picasso ran a government in exile, or that the canvas ended the dictatorship.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
