# Barcelona opens a Museu Picasso on a gift of early work during Franco’s Spain

Date: 1963

## The fact

In 1963 Barcelona opened the Museu Picasso, centred on early work given through Jaume Sabartés and related deposits. This Fact stores that public access under a dictatorship, distinct from the anti-Franco Guernica condition.

## Context

A city museum of youth work can exist while a political mural is withheld. Do not use 1963 to cancel 1937, and do not use 1937 to deny that Barcelona hung pictures.

[Pablo Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Museu Picasso Barcelona and Britannica independently date the 1963 public museum.

Official or archival record: Museu Picasso Barcelona (https://museupicassobcn.cat/en; Museu Picasso Barcelona).

## Significance

Local-access path. High confidence on 1963.

A Gothic quarter museum is not a 1944 PCF cell.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1963 Barcelona Picasso museum. Not established: that this was a Franco endorsement of Guernica, or that Picasso moved back.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
