# Blue-period pictures of illness, poverty and hospital subjects later enter public collections

Date: 1904

## The fact

Around 1901–04 [Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) painted Blue-period pictures of poverty, illness and confinement that later public museums hang as dated objects. This Fact stores that later health-visibility access, not a claim that he staffed a hospital.

## Context

A blue canvas is not a nightingale reform. Confidence medium. Still closer than ignoring that the public record of his early work is full of sickrooms and cells.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Tate’s Picasso pages and Britannica independently describe the Blue period’s hospital-and-poverty subjects as a public corpus.

Official or archival record: Tate — Pablo Picasso (https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/pablo-picasso-1767; Tate).

## Significance

Visibility path. Medium confidence on welfare size; high that the pictures exist and are public.

A sickroom picture is not Guernica. Keep 1937 as bombing, 1904 as poverty-illness visibility.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Blue-period public pictures of illness and poverty. Not established: a hospital statute, or a mortality series caused by a canvas.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
