# Picasso’s Vallauris ceramics create cheaper multiples beside unique canvases

Date: 1948

## The fact

From 1948 [Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) worked at Vallauris on ceramics issued as editions, a dated multiples practice. This Fact stores cheaper-than-oil access, not a claim that workers could buy Guernica.

## Context

Multiples can be a democratic plate and can be a branded luxury. Store the relative price drop against unique canvases. Auction-inequality remains a worsening row.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Musée Picasso Paris and Tate independently document the Vallauris ceramic editions.

Official or archival record: Musée Picasso Paris (https://www.museepicassoparis.fr/en; Musée national Picasso-Paris).

## Significance

Multiples-access path. High confidence on 1948 ceramics; medium on any equality series.

A plate is not a [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin) portrait. 1953 remains.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1948– Vallauris ceramic editions. Not established: that plates cancelled the living artist’s market concentration.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
