# Picasso dies at Mougins; later public museums are built from the estate

Date: 1973

## The fact

On 8 April 1973 [Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) died at Mougins. The studio ceased as a private production site. Later national and city museums opened on dation and gifts. This Fact stores the end of private control plus the later public-record path without mixing them into a miracle.

## Context

He did not designate UNESCO. Heirs and states bargained. 1961 marriage is a separate legal row. 1985 Paris is a separate door.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Musée Picasso Paris and Britannica independently date the death and the later museum.

Official or archival record: Musée Picasso Paris (https://www.museepicassoparis.fr/en; Musée national Picasso-Paris).

## Significance

Archive-access path. High confidence on 8 April 1973.

Do not treat a death as Guernica. The mural is 1937.

## What is established and what is not

Established: death 8 April 1973; later public museums from the estate. Not established: that death itself improved [humanitarian access](/drivers/humanitarian-access).

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
