# Guernica tours as a fundraising and awareness instrument for Spanish Republican relief

Date: 1938

## The fact

From 1938 Guernica travelled as a public fundraising and awareness object for Spanish Republican relief. This Fact stores that tour, not the 1937 painting date and not the 1992 Madrid hanging.

## Context

A tour can raise money and can become a celebrity object. Store the relief mechanism. Do not invent a unique dollar total not in the cited museum files.

[Pablo Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Rethinking Guernica’s documentary chronology and Britannica independently describe the post-1937 travels.

Official or archival record: Rethinking Guernica — Museo Reina Sofía documentary project (https://guernica.museoreinasofia.es/en; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía).

## Significance

Relief-publicity path. High confidence that tours occurred; medium on any one city’s take.

A tour is not a party membership. 1944 remains separate.

## What is established and what is not

Established: post-1937 touring of Guernica for Republican relief/publicity.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
