# Party aesthetic institutions try to discipline Picasso’s Stalin image and he remains inside the PCF

Date: 1953

## The fact

In March 1953 communist cultural institutions publicly disciplined [Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso)’s [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin) portrait while he remained a PCF member. This Fact stores that institutional-discipline episode, distinct from the polarising fact of the portrait itself.

## Context

Two 1953 rows: the drawing as polarisation, the party paper as institutional control. Split them. He is inside both.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

PCF cultural memory and independent press of the Lettres françaises affair independently describe institutional attack plus continued membership.

Official or archival record: Parti communiste français (https://www.pcf.fr/; Parti communiste français).

## Significance

Institutional-discipline path. High confidence on the 1953 public row.

A party editor is not a Reina Sofía curator. Keep 1992 access.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1953 party-institution controversy over the Stalin portrait with continued PCF membership. Not established: a embezzlement file, or that 1937 was a party order.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
