# Picasso remains in Nazi-occupied Paris rather than going into exile

Date: 1940

## The fact

From 14 June 1940 [Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) lived and worked in occupied Paris until the Liberation. This Fact stores that wartime remaining as documented ambiguity, not as a signed collaboration order and not as a Resistance command.

## Context

Guernica already existed as anti-Franco public speech. Remaining in Paris does not unpaint it. It also does not become a combat record. Split 1937 from 1940.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Musée Picasso Paris occupation-period interpretation and Britannica independently place him in Paris 1940–44.

Official or archival record: Musée Picasso Paris (https://www.museepicassoparis.fr/en; Musée national Picasso-Paris).

## Significance

Occupation-ambiguity path. Medium confidence on welfare sign; high that he stayed.

Staying is not a [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin) portrait. 1953 is another paper.

## What is established and what is not

Established: residence and work in occupied Paris 1940–44. Not established: a documented German commission as official artist in this catalog, or a maquis command.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
