# Picasso marries Olga Khokhlova; the marriage later becomes a documented legal conflict

Date: 1918

## The fact

On 12 July 1918 [Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) married Olga Khokhlova, a documented civil/religious marriage. Later public legal conflict over separation and support is part of the independent biographical record. This Fact stores those legal-public acts, not gossip.

## Context

User rule: women as documented relationships not gossip-as-Fact. Marriage date and later legal conflict qualify. Studio myth does not.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Musée Picasso Paris family chronology and Britannica independently date the 1918 marriage.

Official or archival record: Musée Picasso Paris (https://www.museepicassoparis.fr/en; Musée national Picasso-Paris).

## Significance

Gendered-legal path. High confidence on the marriage date; medium on welfare size of later legal conflict.

A marriage certificate is not a canvas. Keep 1907.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 12 July 1918 marriage to Olga Khokhlova and later public legal conflict in biographies. Not established: a criminal docket in this catalog, or private scenes as Facts.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
