# Picasso joins the French Communist Party after the Liberation

Date: 1944

## The fact

In October 1944 [Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) joined the Parti communiste français, a public political affiliation after the Liberation.

## Context

Anti-Franco 1937 is not cancelled. [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin)’s 1953 portrait is the sharper later cost.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The PCF’s public identity and Britannica independently date the 1944 adhesion.

Official or archival record: Parti communiste français (https://www.pcf.fr/; Parti communiste français).

## Significance

Polarisation path. High confidence on 1944 membership.

A card is not a bombing mural. Keep 1937.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1944 PCF membership. Not established: that he sat on the Politburo, or that 1937 was already a party mural.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
