# Guernica is installed as a public collection object at the Museo Reina Sofía

Date: 1992

## The fact

In 1992 Guernica was installed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía as a public collection centrepiece, after the 1981 return to Spain. This Fact stores that Madrid public-access act.

## Context

Return after Franco is a democratic-access story. It does not unpaint 1953’s [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin) portrait. Split gifts and harms.

[Pablo Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Reina Sofía’s Guernica page and the Prado as the prior public [holder](/people/eric-holder) independently mark the modern-art transfer.

Official or archival record: Museo Reina Sofía — Guernica (https://www.museoreinasofia.es/en/collection/artwork/guernica; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía).

## Significance

National-access path. High confidence on 1992 Reina Sofía hanging.

A Madrid wall is not a 1937 pavilion. Keep both.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1992 Reina Sofía public Guernica. Not established: that Picasso chose the building, or that 1992 cancelled PCF membership.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
