# Picasso’s Stalin portrait for Les Lettres françaises triggers a public communist aesthetic controversy

## The fact

In March 1953 [Picasso](/people/pablo-picasso)’s portrait of [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin) was published in Les Lettres françaises and immediately became a public controversy inside communist culture.

## Context

A peace dove and a Stalin head are different papers. Do not rebate 1953 with 1937. Do not treat the party’s displeasure at the drawing as innocence of Stalin.

Pablo Picasso is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
