# Interior ministry confirms Sohail Afridi is in preventive custody

On 12 October 2026, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry confirmed that former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister [Sohail Afridi](/people/sohail-afridi) and some of his cabinet members had been taken into preventive custody after governor's rule was imposed in the province. Dawn reported that a senior police official said eight people were being held, including Afridi, [National Assembly](/organizations/national-assembly) member Junaid Akbar and provincial assembly speaker Babar Saleem Swati. Talal Chaudhry said those facing cases would be charged and tried and that others would be released. PTI described the detentions as arrests and an attack on the elected provincial mandate. No court ruling on the lawfulness of the detentions had been reported.
