# Prigozhin launches the Wagner rebellion

Date: 2023

On 23 June 2023, [Prigozhin](/people/yevgeny-prigozhin) initiated an armed rebellion after a prolonged confrontation with Russia's senior military leadership. Wagner forces took control of key military sites in Rostov-on-Don and a column advanced toward Moscow before Prigozhin ordered it to stop. The immediate confrontation ended after negotiations involving Belarusian president [Alexander Lukashenko](/people/alexander-lukashenko). The rebellion demonstrated a severe rupture inside Russia's war apparatus, but Prigozhin did not repudiate the invasion of Ukraine; his dispute centered on military leadership, conduct and control.
