# Raphael paints Pope Leo X with cardinals as a Medici power image

## The fact

Around 1518 [Raphael](/people/raphael)’s shop produced the portrait of Leo X with Cardinals Giulio de’ Medici and Luigi de’ Rossi, now a Uffizi holding. The painting is a completed court image of papal kin in red. It is not a reform decree.

## Context

Papal-family display. Technical brilliance does not cancel the office it glamorises. Restoration of varnish is another row if dated.

Raphael is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
