# Julius II’s Vatican stanze programme includes Raphael’s School of Athens

## The fact

From 1509 [Raphael](/people/raphael)’s workshop painted the Stanza della Segnatura for Julius II, including the School of Athens. Payments and Vasari fix a papal job, not a free academy. This Fact is the fresco as a completed court instrument.

## Context

Papal propaganda. The wall is also a knowledge picture stored on improving rows.

Raphael is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
