# Maria Ressa convicted of cyber libel in Manila

On 15 June 2020 a Manila court convicted Rappler chief executive [Maria Ressa](/people/maria-ressa) and former researcher Reynaldo Santos Jr. of cyber libel over a 2012 article, under a law enacted after the article's publication. Press-freedom groups called the case politically motivated amid Rappler's reporting on [Rodrigo Duterte](/people/rodrigo-duterte)'s drug war.
