# Yugoslavia establishes the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade to hold his archive

Date: 1952

## The fact

On 5 December 1952 the Yugoslav government resolved to establish the [Nikola Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla) Museum in Belgrade. The museum opened on 20 October 1955 and remains the [holder](/people/eric-holder) of Tesla’s personal archive. This Fact stores the public-record path, not a miracle of death.

## Context

The urn and the papers are later museum holdings. UNESCO’s 2003 Memory of the World listing is a separate Fact. Contribution is small and complex on the museum itself.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The museum’s history page dates the 1952 decision and 1955 opening. UNESCO’s Memory of the World entry independently identifies the Belgrade archive.

Official or archival record: Nikola Tesla Museum — history (https://tesla-museum.org/en/museum/history/; Nikola Tesla Museum, Belgrade).

## Significance

Knowledge-access path through an archive. High confidence on the institutional dates.

A museum is not a motor patent. Keep 1888 and 1952 on separate rows.

## What is established and what is not

Established: museum founded 1952, opened 1955, holding the personal collection. Not established: that Tesla designated a Yugoslav museum in a 1943 will that this catalog cites.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
