On 24 June 2023 [Yevgeny Prigozhin](/people/yevgeny-prigozhin)’s Wagner column seized the southern military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don and said it wanted defence minister [Sergei Shoigu](/people/sergei-shoigu) and the chief of the General Staff, [Valery Gerasimov](/people/valery-gerasimov).
