On 21 January 1924 Vladimir Ilyich Lenin died at Gorki after a series of strokes. Pravda published the bulletin. A collective leadership then fought over succession. Embalming and the mausoleum are a related [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin)-era cult Fact.
