## The fact

On 24 June 2023 [Yevgeny Prigozhin](/people/yevgeny-prigozhin)’s Wagner column seized the southern military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don and said it wanted defence minister [Sergei Shoigu](/people/sergei-shoigu) and the chief of the General Staff.

## Context

Wagner had fought inside the same Ukraine war. A defence-ministry order to bring Wagner under regular command sat in the neighbourhood of the mutiny. He remained in office that week.
