Date: 2018

On 15 October 2018, meeting in Minsk, the Holy Synod of the [Russian Orthodox Church](/organizations/russian-orthodox-church) cut eucharistic communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate after Bartholomew I's synod moved toward recognising an independent Ukrainian church. Until Constantinople reversed course, Russian clergy were barred from serving alongside its clergy and Russian laity from taking sacraments in its churches.
