# Paul Ryan elected Speaker of the House

Date: 2015

On 29 October 2015 the House chose [Paul Ryan](/people/paul-ryan) of Wisconsin as Speaker, succeeding [John Boehner](/people/john-boehner), who had resigned under pressure from the conference's hard right. Kevin McCarthy had been running to replace Boehner that autumn but abruptly withdrew, which opened the way for Ryan's candidacy.
