## The fact

In 1898 Stanley Lane-Poole issued [Saladin](/people/saladin) and the Fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, which became a standard English Life.

## Context

1898 is also the year Wilhelm II ostentatiously visited Damascus and the tomb. British and German usable pasts of the same sultan are not the same Fact.

Saladin is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
