# Modern Arab republics adopt the Eagle of Saladin as state heraldry

## The fact

From the 1952 Egyptian revolutionary regime onward, the Eagle of [Saladin](/people/saladin) became a widely copied Arab republican emblem. He did not draw the republican eagle.

## Context

Heraldry makes a sultan a logo of later military republics. That is polarising official culture, not a 1176 inscription. Conservation of the citadel is a different row.

Saladin is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
